WWE doles out the cash

June 13th, 2008, 4:17 pm by Brad Milner

World Wrestling Entertainment, and more accurately, Vince McMahon, gave away $1 million dollars during the live broadcast of Monday Night Raw last week. He’s going to do it all over again this Monday.

At first glance this was an obvious way to attract viewers since ratings have dipped in recent months. It also was too good to be true. This had to be some kind of work, right?

You could win a load of cash

Not so my friend. Several people were called during the broadcast, were asked to give the password (given at the opening and sporadically throughout the show) and then they earned the cash. Some won $200,000, others won around $52,000 and another was the unfortunate victim of the Door No. 3 gag. You know, the one with the prize you don’t want.

Sarah Furhmann won a whopping $2, but she said it was still fun to be called. She received a free trip to New York as a consolation prize, but then again all of the other winners did, too.

It’s easy to enter. Head over to wwe.com. You’re required to give them your address, a working e-mail address and the phone number where you can be phoned at between 8 p.m. to about 10:15 p.m.

Once your info is stored, you can go back each day and receive an entry by typing in the e-mail address you registered with.

Simple as pie and you may walk away with some nice cash, just like $250,000 winner Steve Rosenzweig, though he said he’s going through a divorce and we’ll only see half. But, half is better than nothing.

Randy Orton injured

June 2nd, 2008, 8:56 am by Brad Milner

WWE’s top heel on Raw, Randy Orton, was injured during his Last Man Standing Match against Triple H at Sunday’s One Night Stand pay-per-view.

Randy Orton was Raw's top heel

Orton took a bad bump after being thrown over the top rope. Orton grabbed his left shoulder and was later put down in the match with a sledgehammer shot.

The word is a broken left collarbone. There was no word early Monday as to how long Orton will be on the shelf.

This puts JBL as the top heel on Raw, and a match with Triple H could be upcoming. However, this is the perfect time for a John Cena heel turn. He already takes a lot of heat from the crowd, and the fans who like him will still do so.

Orton being out is a fresh start for some of the other guys. Even though his matches with Triple H were all good, it’s time for something different. This latest injury all but insures Triple H will keep the title until at least SummerSlam and likely beyond.

I’ll update Orton’s status as news trickles out.

Wrasslin’ Wrankings (25)

May 11th, 2008, 9:11 pm by Brad Milner

Let’s kick off this momentous edition of the Wrasslin’ Wrankings with some news and notes.

Where is Coach?

Mick Foley’s replacing of Jonathan Coachman on SmackDown has raised questions about Coach’s whereabouts. Word leaked that he reportedly was heading to ESPN. SLAM! Sports has reportedly said ESPN has denied the hiring.

Wrasslin' Wrankings

Hmmmmm, where does this leave Coach? For one, I understand he does decent play-by-play outside of pro wrestling. He also has shown a bit of humor and would be serviceable as an anchor at ESPN.

Heck, maybe this is just another angle, where they’ll have Coach crawl back and ask for his job since ESPN rebuffed him. More likely, it’s a case of both sides not coming to an agreement just yet.

Where is John Cena?

WWE is again building up a JBL match without the help of his opponent. They built up JBL’s match with Chris Jericho with few run-ins. The same is being done with JBL-Cena.

WWE Backlash thoughts, predictions

April 25th, 2008, 11:37 am by Brad Milner

WWE’s Backlash features what is the weakest pay-per-view card of the year, but it’s not without some good matches.

The Batista-Shawn Michaels clash will be a good one, and Batista will flourish because he doesn’t have to carry the match. This is the first contest in what should be a long summer program for the superstars.

The Fatal Four Way Elimination Match for the WWE Championship also is full of intrigue. The big question is will Randy Orton somehow walk out with the title? No one expected him to do the same at WrestleMania, but he did.

I’m not 100 percent sure I’ll purchase the event. If I do I may blog during the show, but we’re supposed to have upgrades to our blogging system that day and it could put a damper on the night. If I do blog, you’ll see a post entitled live Backlash results or something along those lines.

A week of WrestleMania: XXIV predictions

March 28th, 2008, 10:04 am by Brad Milner

Let’s get right to this.

Starting off, the 24-man battle royale to determine the No. 1 contender for Chavo’s ECW Championship is the dark match and can be seen on WWE.com at 5:30 p.m. CDT. There’s only a few guys who are legit contenders to win, and I’d say the one who is victorious will beat Chavo later. Hmmm, I’ll go with Kane.

Here are some quick predictions before getting to the meat: The Bunny Mania match is time for the bathroom break. JBL vs. Finlay will be a good brawl. Finlay will win. Batista and Umaga will be the same type of match. Smackdown still is the B show and Batista will win to start a longer brand battle. And as mentioned earlier, Kane defeats Chavo for ECW gold.

Now to the good stuff.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match: OK, Shelton Benjamin (poor, poor Shelton), Carlito and the two ECW guys won’t win. I say this because holding a year-long contract to wrestle for the ECW carries little excitement. If Morrison or CM Punk win I think it would be wise to build them up and tease to a possible major title challenge. Both are outstanding athletes and deserve that possibility.

Kennedy saying he’ll cash in that night means there’s little chance of him winning. I’ll go with Chris Jericho, as he deserves a good push with how badly his first two programs have gone.

A week of WrestleMania: The best matches

March 25th, 2008, 12:56 pm by Brad Milner

Twenty-three years of previous WrestleManias have provided some of the greatest matches of all time. Others aren’t on the list of greats, but are still memorable. Sifting through it all, and taking the stroll down memory lane, has been enjoying.

WWE already has compiled its list of the 22 greatest matches (released prior to the 2007 event, of course.) It also is currently provided a Top 10 list of memorable matches.

You can relive their Top 22 matches by clicking here. A history of WrestleMania can be found here.

The Top 10 countdown, currently ongoing at WWE.com, can be viewed by clicking here.

A few matches popped into my head immediately, including the epic encounter between Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania 6, the battle between Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and Randy “Macho Man” Savage, the first ladder match and Andre-Hogan.

Here are my most memorable matches, in descending order by event.

A week of WrestleMania: The Undertaker streak

March 24th, 2008, 11:20 am by Brad Milner

We’re now a week away from WrestleMania XXIV, which resides in Orlando this time. Now it’s time to turn this blog into a week-long celebration of the best sports entertainment event of the year.

I’ll talk about my favorite moments and memorable matches. I’ll patrol youtube for the best WrestleMania videos and later in the week give you my predictions.

Well, you can’t start a conversation about WrestleMania without The Undertaker. Contrary to what Shawn Michaels may think, Undertaker is “Mr. WrestleMania.” Undertaker is the main attraction, despite being in the secondary main event slot.

He’s 15-0 and will soon be 16-0 after defeating Edge for the World Championship. His list of victims includes Ric Flair, Kane, Triple H, Batista and Randy Orton. His streak is impressive and I’m curious to know if this was a planned storyline.

My feeling is he was scripted to win in the first six or seven matches due to current situations in play. Then it took on a life of its own. Then the WWE thought of ways to make this something truly special.

Wrasslin’ Wrankings (24)

March 14th, 2008, 8:19 pm by Brad Milner

I stumbled upon an old American Wrestling Association show from 1986 on ESPN Classic over the weekend. It came on at 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, so I didn’t watch too much.

The first match featured a young Curt Hennig facing off against a tattooed foe whose name escapes me at this moment. It was in Las Vegas and the arena was packed, though nowhere near today’s standards.

The match wasn’t much to watch. The finish saw Hennig land a clubbing blow (the ax it was called, ala his daddy), then Hennig delivered a half dropkick from the middle rope and ended the match with a weak elbow drop and pin.

The next match featured Boris Zukhov against a guy named Patterson, who was called Peterson by the ring announcer. I turned the TV off and went to sleep.

What was amazing was the AWA was at its peak at this time. ESPN had started to broadcast regular one-hour shows and it appeared as if the formerly regional wrestling organization would branch out.

Larry “The Ax” Hennig was elated about the new frontier. He said, “I hope this goes on forever.”

Of course, we know differently. The AWA, along with regional promotions in the South and soon the WCW would fold under the oppressive wing of the WWE. Vince McMahon had a grander vision and he put a premium on not only good wrestling but on stellar production values.

No Way Out predictions

February 14th, 2008, 7:25 pm by Brad Milner

This Sunday’s No Way Out pay-per-view benefits greatly from the buildup for WrestleMania 24 in Orlando. To that point, you’ll hear no complaining from me. I’m going to purchase this event, which is full of intrigue.

Both major titles are one the line (three if you choose to include the ECW Title as major). And both No. 1 contenders will be decided in two six-man Elimination Chamber matches. Raw’s Chamber will succeed the Smackdown/ECW without even trying, but both will be entertaining.

I have no doubt No Way Out will surpass the Royal Rumble. For that I am thankful. As far as surprises, I’ll go out on a limb and say this could be the time for the return of the Big Show, who signed a new contract last month and has been working his way back to ring shape.

Maybe he’ll even step into one of the Chamber matches to cause a favorite to lose. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Here are my No Way Out predictions:

Surprise, it’s John Cena

January 28th, 2008, 10:40 am by Brad Milner

I was wrong about there being no surprises at the Royal Rumble. There was one huge one.

John Cena returned from a pectoral tear and won the Royal Rumble by tossing Triple H over the top rope. Cena was the 30th entrant in the annual event and I admit I was shocked.

I have made it a rule to not check up on the rumors leading into a pay-per-view. I couldn’t tell you if it was well known that Cena would return or not, though I think it was a surprise to most of the wrestling community. I can tell you his entry saved an otherwise lackluster show.

The Royal Rumble Match is always an intriguing 60 minutes. The end was nothing short of amazing, especially given the fact Cena was reported to miss 6 to 8 weeks when he endured the injury in October. The quick recovery leads me to believe they fudged a bit on the severity of the injury.

The four singles matches on the card were OK. The worst match was a tie between Ric Flair-MVP and Chris Jericho-JBL. The best match was Jeff Hardy-Randy Orton, which came out as expected.

WrestleMania 24 in Orlando likely will feature an Orton-Cena match, with the possibility of adding Triple H for a triple threat.

UPDATE, Jan. 29, 10:24 a.m.: Well, Cena and Orton will battle at No Way Out. Six men will fight inside the Elimination Chamber for the right to face the champ at WrestleMania. I’d say Orton’s time as champ is done, but he may be able to escape No Way Out by DQ or something like that. Triple H should win the Chamber and go on to Mania. The triple threat between Triple H, Cena and Orton is a distinct possibility. However, if that happens, look for Cena to win.
