Did Tatum Bell steal your bags, too?

September 4th, 2008, 4:17 pm by Brad Milner

The strangest story of the week came when former Cincinnati Bengal Rudi Johnson signed with the Detroit Lions. That wasn’t strange in itself. The fact he accused Tatum Bell of stealing his luggage was the odd part.

Tatum Bell was accused of running out of Detroit with Rudi Johnson's luggage

You can read the story by clicking here if you need a refresher.

The Lions had no more need for Bell, who was expendable after Johnson came in. In fact, it was the same story for Bell in Denver. Even more to the fact is how Denver has a way of getting the most out of their running backs, then seeing that they are breaking down or becoming unstable and dropping them.

Bell had a decent time in Denver, but never panned out. He was traded for Dre Bly, which was an upgrade.

Denver stood by Travis Henry while he battled a positive drug test last season. The Broncos saw the writing on the wall and got rid of him in the offseason.

A bevy of football predictions

August 25th, 2008, 3:03 pm by Brad Milner

Football season is creeping ever closer, with the NCAA starting this weekend and the NFL the next. High school football also starts next Friday.

I’ll start off a glance at the NFL and NCAA Football in general. I’ll have my Florida State and ACC predicitions within the next two weeks. Make sure to look out for them.

Knowshon knows how to win

Here we go…………….

… Gators fans, your team will not win a national championship. However, they will be in the hunt for most of the season, given their all-world quarterback who goes by a name in my circle of friends that can’t be put here. The defense will be the downfall.

… There’s much talk about how the Southeastern Conference is so difficult, yet it has produced the past two national champions. This year is no different, as Georgia wins it all.

… And who will the Bulldogs play for said title? Ohio State is a logical choice. But it will be Oklahoma.

… Clemson will finish in the Top 5.

… Bobby Bowden will be out the door if FSU wins less than 8 games.

… Joe Paterno will be just like Bowden, with one-year deals the norm. However, unlike Bowden he’ll leave the school on “his terms” rather than stepping away for the good of the program.

Revisiting my 2007 predictions

August 21st, 2008, 10:22 am by Brad Milner

Here’s a glance at my predictions from last year, with comments on how good or bad I did.

… Florida Gators’ fans. Your team will not repeat as national champions. The Gators could win the SEC East, but the conference belongs to LSU this season. (Yes, and yes).

… Despite a tough schedule, Florida State will win nine games and return to the ACC Championship Game. But like LSU in the SEC, Virginia Tech owns the ACC. (Way no and yes)

… West Virginia and LSU will play for the national championship. LSU will win. (Off on one, good on the other)

… My alma mater, Colorado State, still stinks. (Yes, and they will be even worse this year)

… Duke will go winless again. (Close. The Dukies won 1)

What’s to come

August 19th, 2008, 10:05 am by Brad Milner

I love baseball. I love football season even more.

That means it’s creeping up to the time for my can’t miss (or miss in some cases) predictions for the college and professional seasons. I’ll release my ACC, SEC, overall college and NFL picks in the coming days.

I’ll start by revisiting my predictions from last year. Then I’ll dive into the 2008 season, which, as always, will be interesting.

Here’s one tidbit to think about. My buddy, Brandon, seems to think Florida State will start 8-0 and finish 9-3. That’s pretty bold, but I can see where he came to that conclusion when looking at the schedule and gazing into his mind, which is a pretty scary thing to do if you knew him.

Distracting from the distractions

August 4th, 2008, 3:59 pm by Brad Milner

Distraction.

It’s the buzzword in sports. Player A had some trouble off the field so it will distract the team. We have a quarterback controversy so it will distract the team. A dude stubbed his toe and blamed it on the coach so it will distract the team.

You get the idea.

Distractions are overrated in my opinion. It’s simple to think about the task at hand. After all that’s an athletes; main function.

But in case if you haven’t noticed, there’s been plenty of “distractions” this week. Here’s a rundown:

The Brett Favre saga continues

July 28th, 2008, 10:22 am by Brad Milner

Brett Favre didn’t report to Packers training camp, even though he said he would. He said he has his reinstatement letter ready to go, but he hasn’t sent it in yet.

He wants to be let go. He wants the Packers to let go. But they aren’t budging.

It’s likely Favre will be traded this week. Where that is is still up in the air, with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay as the only teams given permission to inquire about a trade.

Favre wants more suitors. He’s hoping the Packers will have a brain fart and allow the Vikings to join the fray. That ain’t happening.

I was critical of the Packers in their handling of one of the best quarterbacks of all time. But Favre is making it difficult to stay on his side, even in the state of Wisconsin.

Jerk(s) of the Week (July 14): Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy

July 14th, 2008, 9:23 am by Brad Milner

In the immortal words of Ben Stiller in “There’s Something About Mary,” “What about Brett Favera?”

Yes, what about Brett Favre? If you ask the Green Bay Packers the answer would be who cares?

Favre wants to play again, months after he retired. The Packers, and more specifically General Manager Ted Thompson and Coach Mike McCarthy, have other ideas.

Favre asked for his release. They won’t allow it.

Favre wants to be traded. They probably won’t do that, either.

Basically they told the face of the franchise that he would be an active member of the team, but he wouldn’t be the starting quarterback. He inquired about a coaching position, and they said no.

NFL notes: Cutler, Harrison

May 2nd, 2008, 3:39 pm by Brad Milner

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The problem persisted last season, causing Cutler to have a lack of energy and lose 35 pounds.

It wasn’t until routine blood tests prior to the team’s offseason workouts that the problem was revealed. He now know his life is going to change, but he will be able to continue playing as long as the disease is managed well.

For those who don’t know, I also am a Type 1 diabetic. It was a shock, but the choice to get with the program was easy. Either I did it, or I was going to die sooner than I wanted.

Cutler’s case is reminiscent of so many others. I urge everyone, especially those with a family history, to be tested for diabetes. If you lack energy, or are losing weight or dehydrated, see a doctor.

Jerk(s) of the Week (March 10): The Oakland Raiders

March 10th, 2008, 8:32 am by Brad Milner

I wish I could nominate the worst team in the world for this honor every week, but alas I cannot. The Raiders have been known for many things in their history, including most recently being one of the worst teams in the NFL.

The front office also has a way of making boneheaded decisions. The latest was signing oft-injured wide receiver Javon Walker to a six-year deal that could be worth up to $55 million. He received a $6 million signing bonus and will make $5 in the first two years with the team.

This idiotic amount went to a wide receiver who had fewer than 300 yards last season with Denver. He had a decent year the season before, but went back on the injured list for most of last year.

Jerk(s) of the Week (Feb. 4): The New England Patriots

February 4th, 2008, 10:30 am by Brad Milner

Ding dong the Patriots are dead.

The world’s combined mojo against the hated team worked wonders in Super Bowl XLII, and I thank those who joined the fight. OK, the New York Giants defense had more to do with it than fate, but we can all take solace in the fact that the Patriots failed. Thousands of Patriots fans (the true ones, who know who Steve Grogan and Stanley Morgan are without Googling their names) are having a pretty cruddy Monday.

That’s why the New England Patriots are my Jerks of the Week. They failed in their bid to go unbeaten. Instead, they are the biggest failures ever.

There have been three 18-1 teams in the history of the NFL. They are the only ones without a Super Bowl title.

It was a great game. Eli Manning outplayed the “great” Tom Brady. And the Giants proved they were the better team. Period.
