Wrasslin’ Wrankings (26)

January 10th, 2009, 3:22 pm by Brad Milner
The Wrasslin' Wrankings are back

The Wrasslin Wrankings are back.

Yes, yes, yes. I know. It’s been a while since my last Wrasslin’ Wrankings.

My only excuse is there is no excuse. But, a slight one might be that fall is dominated by football. I did, however, manage to have some wrestling posts and I’m hoping to have more in 2009.

So, let’s see. A lot has happened over the last several months.

John Cena returned and is now the top face on Raw. Over on Smackdown, Triple H held down the show for a long while before Jeff Hardy finally earned his title reign.

And what an interesting run it is becoming. The latest story line has Hardy and his girlfriend in a car accident, which was shown on Smackdown on Friday. Hardy said he and several other wrestlers were at a party, so you know they may try to work alcohol into the story somewhere.

Plus, we need to know who ran him off the road. My guess is they’ll say it was Edge to spice up their program.

John Cena injured again; Raw thoughts

August 26th, 2008, 2:58 pm by Brad Milner

News came out about John Cena on Monday and it wasn’t good. The WWE star was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday to repair a herniated disc in his neck.

John Cena is on the shelf again

WWE is using the injury in Cena’s program with Batista, saying it occured when the two met at SummerSlam. The injury has been lingering, though, with Cena saying he had numbness in his right arm for a while. He said his strength was leaving him by the day so the only outcome was surgery.

This is Cena’s second major injury in the past year. He tore a pectoral muscle last October and came back in January. There is no timetable for return from this latest injury, but you can bet it will be a few months before we see him again.

Cena’s place as a top star is a given, but his recent position on Raw was somewhere in the middle. He lost to Batista cleanly and hasn’t been in the title hunt in weeks. He was scheduled to be in the Championship Scramble at Unforgiven and I would have been surprised if the plan was for him to win.

Now Cena and Randy Orton are on the shelf. Raw will have to get by without Cena and Orton in the coming weeks, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem.

CM Punk is still an emerging, and increasingly popular champion who will undoubtedly be chased by Batista in the future. JBL has filled the role of top heel well, though his in-ring work hasn’t been the greatest all the time. And the tag team of Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase are both stars in the making.

Speaking of Raw, here are my thoughts on this week’s show after the jump:

SummerSlam thoughts, predictions

August 15th, 2008, 12:40 pm by Brad Milner

SummerSlam takes place this Sunday, and it again is shaping up to be one of the best pay-per-views of the year.

The only problem is the top billing of John Cena vs. Batista has been rushed. Their program quickly accelerated form a little disagreement to a full fledges hatred in a matter of week. I agree with many others who feel this match should have been teased for a long time and built up to a major clash at say, WrestleMania.

But we’re left with their first match this weekend. It won’t be the last by any stretch. Now we just need a clear heel in the thing, and I still think it should be Cena.

Anyhow, here are my SummerSlam predictions.

To the quick stuff, ya know, the matches that are so-so: Matt Hardy will squeak out a win against Mark Henry for the ECW Championship; MVP cheats to win against Jeff Hardy, though this program will be fun to watch in the future; Santino Marella (the funniest man on the roster) and Beth Phoenix (who can be really pretty when she wants to) win the winner-take-all match against Kofi Kingston and Mickie James; and Shawn Michaels will begin to announce his “retirement” only to be interrupted by Chris Jericho.

The big stuff after the jump.

What a week for WWE

July 7th, 2008, 3:13 pm by Brad Milner

I was on vacation last week. I’m back and it’s time to catch up on the recent changes in WWE.

The Draft took place two weeks ago, with Mr. McMahon the victim of a “tragic” accident. It overshadowed the final draft pick, Triple H to SmackDown.

We all recall how Triple H talked his way back onto Raw when he was drafted to the B show a few years back. My immediate thought was we would see the same, but I’m glad he made the switch.

I’ll get to Triple H in a moment.

The huge news was CM Punk’s World Championship victory on Raw last week.

Batista gained revenge on Edge, who was cocky and said he would never appear on Raw again. Batista left and CM Punk’s music hit. It was a genuine surprise (at least to me), and you knew what was coming once he walked out.

CM Punk laid out Edge, pinned him and won the title. This was even more surprising due to how CM Punk has been used in recent weeks. He was on the losing end of several tag matches and wasn’t near the level of what the Money in the Bank winner should be.

No Way Out predictions

February 14th, 2008, 7:25 pm by Brad Milner

This Sunday’s No Way Out pay-per-view benefits greatly from the buildup for WrestleMania 24 in Orlando. To that point, you’ll hear no complaining from me. I’m going to purchase this event, which is full of intrigue.

Both major titles are one the line (three if you choose to include the ECW Title as major). And both No. 1 contenders will be decided in two six-man Elimination Chamber matches. Raw’s Chamber will succeed the Smackdown/ECW without even trying, but both will be entertaining.

I have no doubt No Way Out will surpass the Royal Rumble. For that I am thankful. As far as surprises, I’ll go out on a limb and say this could be the time for the return of the Big Show, who signed a new contract last month and has been working his way back to ring shape.

Maybe he’ll even step into one of the Chamber matches to cause a favorite to lose. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Here are my No Way Out predictions:

Surprise, it’s John Cena

January 28th, 2008, 10:40 am by Brad Milner

I was wrong about there being no surprises at the Royal Rumble. There was one huge one.

John Cena returned from a pectoral tear and won the Royal Rumble by tossing Triple H over the top rope. Cena was the 30th entrant in the annual event and I admit I was shocked.

I have made it a rule to not check up on the rumors leading into a pay-per-view. I couldn’t tell you if it was well known that Cena would return or not, though I think it was a surprise to most of the wrestling community. I can tell you his entry saved an otherwise lackluster show.

The Royal Rumble Match is always an intriguing 60 minutes. The end was nothing short of amazing, especially given the fact Cena was reported to miss 6 to 8 weeks when he endured the injury in October. The quick recovery leads me to believe they fudged a bit on the severity of the injury.

The four singles matches on the card were OK. The worst match was a tie between Ric Flair-MVP and Chris Jericho-JBL. The best match was Jeff Hardy-Randy Orton, which came out as expected.

WrestleMania 24 in Orlando likely will feature an Orton-Cena match, with the possibility of adding Triple H for a triple threat.

UPDATE, Jan. 29, 10:24 a.m.: Well, Cena and Orton will battle at No Way Out. Six men will fight inside the Elimination Chamber for the right to face the champ at WrestleMania. I’d say Orton’s time as champ is done, but he may be able to escape No Way Out by DQ or something like that. Triple H should win the Chamber and go on to Mania. The triple threat between Triple H, Cena and Orton is a distinct possibility. However, if that happens, look for Cena to win.

A case of being taken out of context

November 12th, 2007, 5:10 pm by Brad Milner

I’ll be honest. It’s tough to be a member of the media, especially with people’s preconceived notions. And yes, we deal with accusations of bias here at The News Herald.

My job is to tell a story, to report the happenings as I see them. I have no allegiance to anyone or any school, and I make sure to quote people accurately, allowing them to say what they want to say without twisting their words.

Apparently CNN doesn’t understand this. A recent interview with John Cena made it appear as if he had taken steroids, but didn’t want to give a straight answer. WWE, quite smartly, had a camera crew in attendance at the interview. They captured the exact answer when he was asked if he took steroids.

He said “absolutely not” but that doesn’t show up on the interview. WWE has the video to prove it. You can watch and decide, but I think it’s awfully shady to do something like this.

Unfortunately, CNN and other networks get away with it all the time. And it makes the rest of us, who take pride in our profession, look bad.

You can view the unedited video by clicking here.

You can view the CNN piece by clicking here.

I had a link to the stuff on WWE’s Web site, but they took the story down. I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes away, too.

John Cena injured

October 2nd, 2007, 4:31 pm by Brad Milner

The WWE was dealt a serious blow with the news that champion John Cena will be out 6 to 8 months with a torn pectoral muscle.

Upon first seeing the news on WWE, I was a bit skeptical as the Web site has proved to be a vessel for pushing angles without much “hard news.” But, Dr. James Andrews, who I interviewed for a recent story on Tommy John surgery, was referenced in the story and gave the diagnosis, lending credibility to the report.

So there will be a new WWE champion at No Mercy this weekend. There has been little news about what will happen, though you can expect Randy Orton and several other top stars being in some type of match. There even have been rumors of Chris Jericho’s return, including one report that he has already been re-signed by the organization.

Cena has mixed popularity, but he created a buzz around WWE. His fans tuned in to see him, while his detractors did the same but for different reasons, mainly holding out hope he would lose.

This probably comes at a good time for Cena, who was rumored to be set on making another film. It’s bad news for WWE, even with the 50-50 split in fan favoritism.

The WWE needs a champion who can carry the load for several months. I still don’t think Orton can do so. Perhaps Mr. Kennedy can, but the company doesn’t seem ready to get behind him. The evental champion will have to be as dynamic as Cena.

Jericho has already proved he can have a lasting title run. He may be the only one who could fill the void, aside from Triple-H.

Any thoughts?

SummerSlam impressions

August 27th, 2007, 12:08 am by Brad Milner

SummerSlam just ended (as I wrote this Sunday, of course). Here are my feelings on the event.
It wasn’t as good as past SummerSlams, but it was still worth the purchase. The night featured four championship matches with NO title changes. There also wasn’t a tag team match, which was a letdown, especially with the way Cryme Tyme has performed lately.
The surprise of the night was John Cena pinning Randy Orton. I thought this was the end of Cena’s run given the recent push for Orton.
However, it wasn’t the case as Cena nailed the FU and pinned Orton. I will say I’m happy Cena’s run didn’t end against Orton because Orton’s work on the mic is lackluster and he just doesn’t have what it takes it to carry a long title run, in my opinion.
Of course, I think eventually Orton will win the title and have a program with Triple H. It’s too early for Triple H to be back in the title hunt, so a few more months of the Cena-Orton program are in order.

Wrasslin’ Wrankings (19)

March 5th, 2007, 7:38 pm by Brad Milner

A reader from Canada recently called to ask if ECW on SciFi is replayed anytime during the week. A brief discussion revealed something I think would be big down here, if properly organized.

Wrestling pay-per-views are shown at movie theaters in many spots in Canada. I have yet to see that in the places I have lived in the United States, including Colorado, Ohio and Florida.

The caller, who I won’t classify as a Snowbird because I was under the impression that he moved here for good, said each theater charges a nominal fee. He said it was $17, which could have been in Canadian money which is pretty darn cheap.

He said the pay-per-view is shown on three or four screens in the theater and each one is packed with wrestling fans of all ages. Everyone enjoys the show with popcorn, candy or drinks, and the action is displayed on the big screen with booming sound.

I think this would be a great way to spend a few hours. Watching it at home has its merits, but when you have an HDTV like I do, you don’t get the whole effect because pay-per-views aren’t shown in HD.
