Kay Yow’s passing brings back memories of my mother

January 24th, 2009, 3:40 pm by Brad Milner

Legendary basketball coach Kay Yow died from her long battle with breast cancer on Saturday. She was 66.

Through all of her trials she maintained a positive outlook. She battled the disease since 1987. It had spread to her liver and bone and you know it wasn’t pleasant.

It’s times like these that I think about my mother, Carol, who died while I was in college. The belief was she died of diabetic complications, as my mother was never one to want to seek medical care. She was found in the hallway by my sister at our childhood home.

Her apparent distaste for medical care was due to her earlier battle with breast cancer. Not many people know my mother also had this disease, which has a way of touching more people than you know.

John Cena injured again; Raw thoughts

August 26th, 2008, 2:58 pm by Brad Milner

News came out about John Cena on Monday and it wasn’t good. The WWE star was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday to repair a herniated disc in his neck.

John Cena is on the shelf again

WWE is using the injury in Cena’s program with Batista, saying it occured when the two met at SummerSlam. The injury has been lingering, though, with Cena saying he had numbness in his right arm for a while. He said his strength was leaving him by the day so the only outcome was surgery.

This is Cena’s second major injury in the past year. He tore a pectoral muscle last October and came back in January. There is no timetable for return from this latest injury, but you can bet it will be a few months before we see him again.

Cena’s place as a top star is a given, but his recent position on Raw was somewhere in the middle. He lost to Batista cleanly and hasn’t been in the title hunt in weeks. He was scheduled to be in the Championship Scramble at Unforgiven and I would have been surprised if the plan was for him to win.

Now Cena and Randy Orton are on the shelf. Raw will have to get by without Cena and Orton in the coming weeks, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem.

CM Punk is still an emerging, and increasingly popular champion who will undoubtedly be chased by Batista in the future. JBL has filled the role of top heel well, though his in-ring work hasn’t been the greatest all the time. And the tag team of Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase are both stars in the making.

Speaking of Raw, here are my thoughts on this week’s show after the jump:

FSU’s Bellamy to miss the season

July 8th, 2008, 1:09 pm by Brad Milner

Florida State offensive lineman Evan Bellamy, a redshirt sophomore expected to start at left guard, will miss the season due to a blood clot, the school’s sports information department announced on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 296-pound Bellamy was hospitalized on Friday with the ailment in his lower left leg. He told FSU that doctors informed him he could be out for six months.

He released a short statement through the school:

“I want to thank all the Seminole fans who have sent me emails and cards. I appreciate it very much. I want everyone to know I will do everything I can to get back out on the football field as soon as possible.”

Perhaps it’s time to revisit this post about how bad FSU could be.

Randy Orton injured

June 2nd, 2008, 8:56 am by Brad Milner

WWE’s top heel on Raw, Randy Orton, was injured during his Last Man Standing Match against Triple H at Sunday’s One Night Stand pay-per-view.

Randy Orton was Raw's top heel

Orton took a bad bump after being thrown over the top rope. Orton grabbed his left shoulder and was later put down in the match with a sledgehammer shot.

The word is a broken left collarbone. There was no word early Monday as to how long Orton will be on the shelf.

This puts JBL as the top heel on Raw, and a match with Triple H could be upcoming. However, this is the perfect time for a John Cena heel turn. He already takes a lot of heat from the crowd, and the fans who like him will still do so.

Orton being out is a fresh start for some of the other guys. Even though his matches with Triple H were all good, it’s time for something different. This latest injury all but insures Triple H will keep the title until at least SummerSlam and likely beyond.

I’ll update Orton’s status as news trickles out.

NFL notes: Cutler, Harrison

May 2nd, 2008, 3:39 pm by Brad Milner

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The problem persisted last season, causing Cutler to have a lack of energy and lose 35 pounds.

It wasn’t until routine blood tests prior to the team’s offseason workouts that the problem was revealed. He now know his life is going to change, but he will be able to continue playing as long as the disease is managed well.

For those who don’t know, I also am a Type 1 diabetic. It was a shock, but the choice to get with the program was easy. Either I did it, or I was going to die sooner than I wanted.

Cutler’s case is reminiscent of so many others. I urge everyone, especially those with a family history, to be tested for diabetes. If you lack energy, or are losing weight or dehydrated, see a doctor.

John Cena injured

October 2nd, 2007, 4:31 pm by Brad Milner

The WWE was dealt a serious blow with the news that champion John Cena will be out 6 to 8 months with a torn pectoral muscle.

Upon first seeing the news on WWE, I was a bit skeptical as the Web site has proved to be a vessel for pushing angles without much “hard news.” But, Dr. James Andrews, who I interviewed for a recent story on Tommy John surgery, was referenced in the story and gave the diagnosis, lending credibility to the report.

So there will be a new WWE champion at No Mercy this weekend. There has been little news about what will happen, though you can expect Randy Orton and several other top stars being in some type of match. There even have been rumors of Chris Jericho’s return, including one report that he has already been re-signed by the organization.

Cena has mixed popularity, but he created a buzz around WWE. His fans tuned in to see him, while his detractors did the same but for different reasons, mainly holding out hope he would lose.

This probably comes at a good time for Cena, who was rumored to be set on making another film. It’s bad news for WWE, even with the 50-50 split in fan favoritism.

The WWE needs a champion who can carry the load for several months. I still don’t think Orton can do so. Perhaps Mr. Kennedy can, but the company doesn’t seem ready to get behind him. The evental champion will have to be as dynamic as Cena.

Jericho has already proved he can have a lasting title run. He may be the only one who could fill the void, aside from Triple-H.

Any thoughts?

Steroid probe hits WWE

March 20th, 2007, 6:38 pm by Brad Milner

As expected, the names of several top professional wrestlers have been linked to the recent steroid raids in Orlando and Mobile, Ala. SI.com on Tuesday reported 11 pro wrestlers were involved, though only six were named.
The list includes Randy Orton, Edge, Rey Mysterio, the late Eddie Guerrero, Shane Helms and Kurt Angle, though his name was linked in earlier reports. WWE’s only comment on the report is that the alleged activities of these wrestlers happened prior to company instituting the Talent Wellness Program.
Orton was reported to have received eight prescriptions for six different drugs. Helms and Edge, listed with his real name of Adam Copeland, allegedly received HGH.

The day my life changed

November 6th, 2006, 11:20 am by Brad Milner

Four years ago my life changed. Today, it continues to do so.

I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic (meaning my pancreas chose to no longer supply me with insulin) in the spring of 2002, after having been taken to the emergency room by my wife in a blur of a morning. Subsequent tests revealed my new condition, and a blood-sugar level of 1,200 nearly put me in a coma. The only thing I recall from the time I was in the ER to the time I was put in the ICU was asking for a more comfortable bed.

Now I take my condition in the same stride, not allowing it to ruin my life. It’s because of diabetes that I concentrate on prolonging my life for as long as possible. When I was diagnosed, I had two choices: accept it and take care of myself or be arrogant and die sooner rather than later.

I chose the former and feel pretty good today. I make sure to watch what I eat, though I am good enough with my regiment that I can splurge from time to time. I should exercise more, but I do what I can, and I make sure to take care of my feet, eyes and legs, among other things.
