Brett Favre didn’t report to Packers training camp, even though he said he would. He said he has his reinstatement letter ready to go, but he hasn’t sent it in yet.

He wants to be let go. He wants the Packers to let go. But they aren’t budging.

It’s likely Favre will be traded this week. Where that is is still up in the air, with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay as the only teams given permission to inquire about a trade.

Favre wants more suitors. He’s hoping the Packers will have a brain fart and allow the Vikings to join the fray. That ain’t happening.

I was critical of the Packers in their handling of one of the best quarterbacks of all time. But Favre is making it difficult to stay on his side, even in the state of Wisconsin.

It appears as though Favre only wants to be put into a situation where he can succeed. While this is understandable, it contradicts his “itch” to play again.

If he truly wants to play then he won’t care where it is. That’s right, he wouldn’t care to play for the Jets, who while probably better with him, won’t compete with the Patriots for the AFC East title. No, Favre would end up taking more chances and his gunslinger mentality would lead to a so-so season.

On the other side you have the Packers, who are standing by Aaron Rodgers. Favre asked to compete for the job. They said no. He asked to come to camp. They said no.

If the Packers truly believe they are better off without Favre then by all means they should trade him to the Vikings. If they are the better team then they could beat the Vikings with Favre.

Instead, by not wanting him to play for the Vikings you are telling the rest of your team that you can’t beat Brett Favre. That’s the wrong signal. And if that is the truth then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be the Packers’ starting quarterback.

He won’t be with Green Bay for obvious reasons. I want him to play for the Vikings, who would immediately become the favorites in the NFC.

I hope that when the Packers do trade Favre that he plays for his new team. I have a sinking feeling he’ll up and retire again. And that would go a long way in destroying that legacy he wants to protect.

In the immortal words of Ben Stiller in “There’s Something About Mary,” “What about Brett Favera?”

Yes, what about Brett Favre? If you ask the Green Bay Packers the answer would be who cares?

Favre wants to play again, months after he retired. The Packers, and more specifically General Manager Ted Thompson and Coach Mike McCarthy, have other ideas.

Favre asked for his release. They won’t allow it.

Favre wants to be traded. They probably won’t do that, either.

Basically they told the face of the franchise that he would be an active member of the team, but he wouldn’t be the starting quarterback. He inquired about a coaching position, and they said no.

He may not even be the backup, if you read into what Thompson said on Saturday. Favre could just be wasted flesh on the sidelines.

And this is for what reason?

Favre brought the Packers back from the brink of irrelevancy. He won a Super Bowl title, was close in a second attempt and had the Packers a few plays away from last year’s title game.

He had one of his best seasons. He played better down the stretch than he did the first eight games of the season. He is a better option than Aaron Rodgers.

Yet Thompson and McCarthy see it a different way. They called the Favre saga a distraction. That it’s bad for poor old Rodgers and the rest of the team.

To that I say shut up. Additionally I say lose some of that weight, McCarthy. I’m overweight, but you are like three of me, dude.

This boils down to two guys on a power trip. Favre is the guy who made sure you had a job, McCarthy. Heck, he even kept Thompson in his cushy seat.

All Favre did was make the Packers one of the best teams in the NFL. He is the best QB on the roster and he should start. As of now he’ll probably be kept in retirement because of you two baffoons.

If only the players union could step in an force a release. Then Favre could play for Minnesota and throttle the Packers twice en route to the NFC Championship Game.

Enjoy life with Rodgers, the guy you are so high on yet you drafted two other quarterbacks. If he was the better option he should have started last season. He’s not and you’ll find that out when Brian Brohm is your starter in 2009.
