More on arrests of FSU’s Reed, Wade (Updated)

Update, Nov. 26, 6:08 p.m.: OK, initial indications from a call I got from work led me to believe Reed and Wade were suspended. That’s not the case, however. Both will be available to play, FSU Coach Bobby Bowden said. He said they have already been disciplined. While true, they were both under investgation at that point and not arrested. They still could receive discipline from the university.

Original post follows:

What a holiday break, eh? Well, Bert Reed and Cameron Wade were arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery on Wednesday in connection with a Nov. 12 fight between FSU football players and members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Reed claimed a week ago that he was the mediator in the brawl. I don’t know too many mediators who throw punches.

You have to wonder how many chances Reed will get? He also had a bit of trouble at Bay, so my simple calculations put this at his fifth life. He’s not a cat, but if he were he wouldn’t have many lives left.

Authorities still have yet to determine who threw the chair in the fight. The flying object struck a female student in the face and she received medical attention for what is believed to be a broken nose.

The good news for both Reed and Wade is that these are minor charges. If they avoid further punishment from the school they should be OK. But, I think they need to drive into these guys’ heads about the importance of staying out of trouble.

They are no good to the team on the sidelines or not even as part of the team. I’m not certain of Wade’s credentials, as I haven’t seen much of him, but Reed has skills and has proved he can play at the Division I level.

He has a whole lot of potential. Hopefully he won’t be another athlete who squanderes his talents.

That’s the one thing that gets me most. The rest of us toil away at our jobs and would never have the chance to see the kind of riches a lot of these guys could get in the NFL. They just think they have the world at their fingertips and mess it up.

And that’s too bad. We’ll see if it happens here. It probably won’t as FSU has stood by them throughout.

But here’s a final bit of advice to Reed. Stop giving interviews. You gave one after your first suspension saying you learned your lesson. That apparently wasn’t true.

Now you say you want to turn your life around and that you were defending your own. It doesn’t look that way, either. Just play football and don’t worry about talking. That’s a tall order for Reed, who is chatty, but it may be the best advice he’ll ever receive.
