The investigation into last week’s fight at the Oglesby Union between members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and Florida State football players is winding down.
As of this writing, the FSU Police Department was nearing the end of more than 20 interviews of people who provided statements. It’s no surprise that many of the accounts differed wildly. The key is finding a common thread.
Maj. Jim Russell said the last of the interviews willl be complete Thursday morning.
On the proactive front, the fraternity issued a statement saying that when all was said and done it would be cleared in the matter. That’s still yet to be seen.
The FSUPD investigator may meet with state prosecutors on Thursday to discuss whether there’s enough evidence to bring charges. Whomever threw the chair that struck the female bystander could face felony aggravated battery charges. A player charged with a felony is out of action indefinately until the case is resolved or plead down to a lesser degree.
An interesting note about the chair if Russell said they have yet to determine who actually threw the it. This is good news for all parties. It doesn’t sound as if they will hash that out given how many interviews and statements they’ve already collected. So we may not see someone take the fall for this after all (loud cheer from FSU football).
Other participants could face misdemeanor charges for crimes such as battery, disorderly conduct and breach of peace. You probably can expect a charge or two for some football players, as well as frat members. But again, we’ll have to wait and see.
FSUPD still has yet to release the official report. Hopefully they will do so on Thursday, though Russell’s correspondence led me to believe that the State Attorney would have to release that.
I’ll keep you posted. And, as always, I’ll have a story when news breaks. Not to toot my own horn (OK, I am), but I was the first reporter from a newspaper in Florida with the story Online. Twice!
Former Bay High football star Bert Reed should be kicked off the FSU football team immediately. The Rule of Three Strikes and You’re Out should apply here with no hesitation.
