FSU’s Surrency suspended

October 30th, 2008, 12:59 pm · 2 Comments · posted by Brad Milner

Florida State wide receiver Corey Surrency was suspended for one game due to a violation of team rules, the school announced on Thursday. Of course, the reason for the suspension was withheld.

He is the second wide reciever suspended in as many weeks. Bert Reed missed last week’s game against Virginia Tech for missing classes.

Surrency hasn’t been the productive pass-catcher the Seminoles hoped for out of junior college. He played well early, but it was against pushovers. He had a slew of drops against North Carolina State and has eight receptions for 158 yards and three touchdowns, with two coming against Western Carolina and UT-Chattanooga.

    This is the guy from Miami who never played high school ball because he was always in trouble with the authorities. He’s 24, and he saw what happened to Bert Reed last week, so if it’s ditching classes he should know better. With a fellow like this, who has had discipline problems, one always suspects the worst.

    With all these suspensions of FSU wideouts, one would expect Preston Parker to have better stats. He had a decent game against NC State, but other than that he has been the forgotten man on the Noles this year, so much so that now they are once again talking about putting him in as a running back.

    It might be because the new QB, Ponder, doesn’t throw as well as Weatherford, or because the O-line isn’t giving them enough time;
    but it could also be a biblical thing: like Sampson, Preston Parker just ain’t been the same man since he cut his dreadlocks off.

    Wonderpig,
    Since this was classified as a violation of team rules I’m thinking it was for something other than missing class. The class policy is an institutional thing, and not so much a team rule. Surrency probably missed a meeting or was out later than he needed to be or something a little worse. Though, one game entials it’s something simple. But you never know.

    And yeah, I think Parker had some trouble adjusting early on. The arrest appeared to shake him, which is good because it forced him to look inside himself. But there’s something still lingering because he hasn’t been explosive and appears to be going through the motions. Imagine how good the offense would be if he was his old self.
