The reason for Bert Reed’s suspension

October 23rd, 2008, 10:45 am · 1 Comment · posted by Brad Milner

Florida State wide receiver Bert Reed was suspended for missing classes, Coach Bobby Bowden said late Wednesday. Bowden declined to give a reason for the suspension during his weekly teleconference, which is why my story went in that direction.

Bowden opened his practice comments about Reed, who drew widl speculation as to the reasons for the one-game suspension. We surmised in the sports department that he missed a meeting, or as Executive Sports Editor Pat McCann guessed, that he missed a class or classes.

Bowden’s comments were odd if you didn’t know the track record of discipline at FSU.

The statement after the jump:

“Bert Reed, to save a lot of speculation, is suspended because of missing classes. I’m afraid that some people are making too much out of that, it’s missing classes.”

A cursory glance woould suggest Bowden is saying that it’s not that bad, that Reed missed classes and has been told to make sure to attend reguarly. But if you take it another way, it sounds something like this: well, it wasn’t like he pulled out a gun. He only missed classes, geez.

This is like the old choose your own adventure novels. You decide what he means. If you ask me, I’d say they didn’t think it was a huge deal, but hey if he misses more classes and his grades drop then he’ll be ineligible. But, at least he didn’t do something bad.

I’m glad to see that the new AD is enforcing the rules at FSU. This young man needs to drag his body into class. It’s part of growing up; regardless of how you feel or what you have going on the side, you have to show up for things that are required of you. Hopefully, he’ll learn his lesson and straighten up and it won’t happen again.
